Fanshawe College

We welcome international students (on a visitor's visa for up to six months or on a student permit) every 4 weeks to our ESL program. Fanshawe offers classes from Level 2 (High Beginning) to Level 5 (Advanced Academic Preparation). Each level has 16 weeks of curriculum. Extracurricular trips and activities are also available for students. Many of our ESL students are preparing to do post-secondary education in Canada, either at the college or university level. Fanshawe's ESL program is now also available to landed immigrants and Canadian citizens. For domestic students, ESL is offered as the Language Studies Stream of our General Arts and Science Program (GAP5). Students pay regular post-secondary tuition and may enrol in September, January or May. This program is eligible for OSAP. Students successfully completing two semesters of the program receive a General Arts and Science Language Studies certificate. This year Huron University College has one section of Writing 001F and two sections of Writing 021F and G for International and Exchange students. These courses are designed to help students at different levels of writing skills who are currently enrolled in programs at Huron University College. They have been running as credit courses for the past five years.. The culture course, which is run by Felicia Goldstein, introduces ESL students to some of the main events, themes, and locations which are important to Canadian culture.

Huron's Peer Guide programme currently has 32 Canadian peer guides matched up with International and Exchange students. The International Activities Programme runs events every Friday evening, and out-of-town trips once or twice a month.

Classes and Services for International Students

International students at King’s have access to all of the student services provided at King’s College. In addition, there are certain classes and services that are specifically tailored to their needs.

ESL Tutoring

The Write Place, King’s Writing Centre, provides instruction from a CultureWorks ESL Instructor. Students can also avail themselves of the services of King’s Effective Writing Instructor and trained peer tutors working at The Write Place.

Bridging Program

King’s College International Students’ Bridging Program provides an opportunity for new international students to become comfortable with King's, Western and London prior to the excitement and hectic pace of the Orientation Program for all new students. The program is a combination of academic orientation, practical workshops and lots of fun!

King’s Peer Connection Program

First year international students who are new to Canada can link up with a Canadian or upper year international student who is already familiar with Canadian university culture. Peer Guides and International Peers meet weekly during the first term to exchange cultural ideas and establish peer connections. Various Peer Connection excursions and events are planned throughout the year.

Counselling Services

Academic counsellors as well as personal counsellors are available for individual appointments. An International Student Advisor provides support for day to day practical concerns, and addresses any cross cultural adjustment issues.

Learning Skills Seminars and Career Support

A Learning Skills Counsellor as well as a Career Counsellor also provide individual appointments. Students can address specific study needs and receive assistance with job searching, resume writing, career exploration and development.

London International Academy is a private international boarding school located in downtown London, Ontario. Our objective is to give international students a good academic background in Ontario curriculum courses to ensure a smooth transition into Canadian university study. We offer Ontario curriculum grade 12 university preparation courses in subjects such as accounting, physics, calculus, geometry and discrete mathematics, and chemistry. We also provide a comprehensive study of English at the ESL, grade 9 academic, grade 11 university preparation and grade 12 university preparation level. The ACE TESOL Certificate Program offered at London Language Institute is an ESL teacher-training course with 100 hours of classroom instruction and a 20-hour supervised practicum. The course is offered in an intensive 4-week format.
Using the ACE Method, trainees explore teaching, learning and language through task-based, participatory and interactive experiences. The content is based upon the most recent research in language acquisition and language education.
The following topics are covered in the course:
- Teaching and learning theory
- Current methodology
- Lesson and Unit Planning
- Teaching Language Systems (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, functions)
- Language Skills (speaking, listening, writing, reading)
- Testing and Evaluation
- Technology
- Preparing Students for Standardized Tests (TOEFL, TOEIC)
Candidates are assessed on the following: an observation report, grammar knowledge and usage, a unit plan, a lesson plan, and individual teaching. Certification is achieved at a pass, high pass or distinction level.
The ACE TESOL Certificate offered at London Language Institute meets the guidelines of TESL Canada.
Applicants must have a University degree* and a demonstrated proficiency in English. Non-native speakers may be requested to provide proof of English proficiency by means of TOEFL or TOEIC, or a comparable standardized test. (Note: Applicants without a University degree may be accepted, however will not qualify for TESL Canada certification)
Total cost: CAN$1500 (includes cost of materials)

SDC’s English Language Support Program

SDC offers supplemental academic English assistance for undergraduate and graduate students who want to improve their English language skills. These short, non-credit courses are offered in the areas of speaking, reading, writing, presentation skills, and critical reasoning. Assignments in the courses relate to the specific academic tasks required by university students.
