ENGAGE  LEARNERS WITH ACTIVE LEARNING TECHNIQUES

By: Barb DeWit

Learn by doing. Experiential learning motivates learners to solve problems, recall past experiences, and be actively involved.

Simulation is one type of experiential learning.

An example of this is acting out a medical situation, with one learner acting as the patient and another learner acting as the physician.

Storytelling is information given by narratives.

A story can be a situation (real or hypothetical) that requires learners to speak and/or write language to solve a problem. Learners can listen to or read a story without a resolution (ending) and work in small groups to formulate responses to the dilemma.

E-mail your own suggestions on how to engage learners with learning by doing.
