TESL Training
Program
Coordinated
through G. A. Wheable Centre
for Adult & Continuing Education
Thames Valley District School Board
The Thames Valley District
School Board has been offering a quality TESL Training Program for over
ten years. It was one of the first programs to be recognized and approved
by TESL Ontario in 2000.
· The program prepares
individuals to instruct ESL to adult learners. It provides a foundation
for the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching English as a Second
Language from an adult educational perspective.
· Topics covered include:
Methodology, Culture and Society, Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition,
Evaluation and Learning Strategies, Hands-on Component, Assessment, Pedagogical
Grammar
· The practicum, which
consists of both an observation and a supervised instructional component,
is arranged, in consultation with the participants, at various locations.
· The TESL Ontario Certification
is a highly sought certification for those wishing to teach adults in
Ontario. To qualify, one must successfully complete a training program
recognized and approved by TESL Ontario as well as meet other requirements..
Details of the Wheable
TESL Training Course:

time hours – Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 5:30 – 9:00
pm and Saturdays 9:00 - 2:00
- Mid-September to
end of May
- In Class Sessions 250 +

- Arranged supervised
Practicum of 50 hours (30 hrs observation + 20 hrs class instruction)

London Language Institute
The TESOL Certificate Program
offered at London Language Institute is an ESL teacher training course
with 100 hours of classroom instruction and a 20-hour supervised practicum.
The course is offered in an intensive 4-week format or a 10-week part-time
format. Full-time programs run Monday to Friday from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m.
for four weeks. Part-time programs are offered Tuesday and Thursday evenings
from 6:00 to 9:15 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Using the ACE Method, trainees
explore teaching, learning and language through task-based, participatory
and interactive experiences. The content is based upon the most recent
research in language acquisition and language education.

in the course:
Teaching and learning theory
Current methodology
Lesson and Unit Planning
Teaching Language Systems (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, functions)
Language Skills (speaking, listening, writing, reading)
Testing and Evaluation
Technology
Preparing Students for Standardized Tests (TOEFL, TOEIC)
The ACE TESOL Certificate
offered at London Language Institute meets the guidelines of TESL Canada.
